Ball Chasing

This is an interesting info-graphic from Canine Arthritis Management. Personally I have never liked ball throwing for dogs, but that has been due to the number of dogs I have seen rushed in as emergencies for having the ball lodged at the back of their throats, and effectively suffocating.

But this has made me think in a whole new way about ball games. I especially find the part about adrenaline and cortisol release from repetitive behaviours being detrimental, very interesting, as we see a fair few dogs who have developed obsessive behaviours.

Perhaps its time we all thought about different games or activities to perform to help our four legged friends, scent work is a great suggestion and actually just varying the location and route of a walk and allowing time to stop and sniffing can be mentally stimulating.
