About Us

Your community veterinary practice in Devon.

Today we’re a mixed, two-branch, RCVS accredited practice with sophisticated facilities and an experienced team of small animal, farm and equine vets and vet nurses, still working with the next generations of some of our original clients.

However, things looked slightly different when Roy Wood first set up our practice in Crediton in 1953 to provide high quality veterinary care to his community.

In true James Herriot style, his writing desk was known to double as an operating table, and the practice’s daily rounds could include up to 40 farm visits a day, covering a large area across mid-Devon.

Roy moved over to our current Barnstaple Cross site in 1955, and by the 1970s he had been joined by his son, Jonathan Wood.

Since then, our team and premises have continued to grow. A 2021 remodel has allowed us to further enhance our facilities, and we’re proud to offer a range of efficient and reasonably priced mixed services at our Barnstaple Cross and Bernaville Nurseries sites.

All of our friendly and accomplished vets can provide mixed animal care, and our day-to-day rota sees team members rotate through all disciplines.

Many of them have been with our practice for years, and we’re proud to have fostered a welcome and relaxed environment for patients, clients and team members alike.

Small Animal

Small animal clients can make the most of our puppy school, separate cat and dog waiting rooms areas, modern diagnostic equipment and dental services, as well as our Braveheart awards, which recognise brave pets.

Our Farm and Equine Services

Our farm services encompass health management plans, reproduction, fertility and laboratory testing, as well as emergency and sick animal work, while equine patients can access our stable block, radiography and ultrasound equipment and our ambulatory service, where animals can be seen at home.

We also offer a 24/7 in-house and ambulatory emergency service for all species, 365 days a year.

We’ve remained at the heart of our community too, through joining in with local events, working with our nearby Blue Cross rescue centre, writing for local parish magazines and sponsoring dog shows, school fetes and our local youth football team.

Sustainability is a big concern for us, as we like to think that we’re not just taking care of your animals, but the planet too.

That’s why we actively recycle whenever we can, avoid disposable consumables like surgical drapes wherever possible (without compromising sterility), and have a water collection butt outside so that we can catch water to water our rabbit herb gardens.

We’ve come a long way since the 1950s, but our commitment to great veterinary care and excellent customer service has remained unchanged.
