About us

In 1953 Mr Roy Wood Veterinary Surgeon set up practice in Western Road Crediton (pictured right). In true James Herriot style he used his desk for the bill writing in the morning, it was then cleared of paper and used as an operating table later in the day! The daily round used to be up 40 farm visits a day shared by Wood and Dent and covering a large area of Mid Devon. The practice was divided in the 1960`s with Harry Dent taking charge of the western side of the A377 and Roy Wood carrying on based in Crediton.

The practice moved in 1955 to the current out of town site at Barnstaple Cross. In the early 1970`s, with Jonathan about to join his father from college, a specialized Veterinary Surgery was built. The surgery facilities have been upgraded and expanded on a regular basis, with the next stage the addition of a new reception and consulting suite. There is good parking for both cars, lorries and horse boxes. We have hospitalisation facilities for up to 16 animals and also an incubator for those requiring a bit more care. Stabling and isolation facilities are also available.

Our Vets are all members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, as well as the BSAVA , BEVA and the BCVA the specialist bodies for small animals, horses and cattle.

RCVS Accredited Practice

In July 2011, the practice successfully underwent an inspection under the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Practice Standards Scheme. Both of the sites were subject to a rigorous inspection by an RCVS appointed veterinary surgeon, who looked at all aspects of the operation of the practice, including staff qualifications and ongoing education, clinical governance and standards of care, out of hours availability and patient care, in-patient and out-patient facilities, diagnostic equipment, pharmacy procedures and all aspects of health and safety.

We are pleased to say that we passed with flying colours and have General Practice accreditations in Small Animal, Equine and Large Animal at Roysden and Core Standards at East Street.

Credit and insurance

As a general rule we do not offer credit and expect payment at the time of treatment.

At the surgery our team are committed to ensuring that you and your pet receive the best treatment and service possible at all times. Repeated trips to any vet however, can mean that costs can quickly add up.

As a practice we cannot emphasise enough the value of pet insurance.

Insuring your pet with a reputable insurance company gives you the confidence and reassurance that you can make decisions about the health care and treatment of your pet without financial constraints.

You can then relax in the knowledge that your pet is receiving the the best possible treatment and that you have one less thing to worry about during what can be a stressful time.
